Blog:Finding doctors
Did you know that, right here on the SC Choices website, you can choose a doctor to be your primary care physician?
Your primary care physician is the main doctor that will take care of you. He or she will give you regular checkups and take care of you when you are sick.
Choose your primary care physician carefully. If you like the doctor you go to now, see if that doctor works with a health plan and choose that health plan. If you don't have a doctor now, ask friends and relatives whose opinions you respect about the doctors they see. Maybe they can help you find the right doctor for you.
Sometimes you need specialty care that your primary care physician can't provide. You can find specialists on www.dhhs.state.sc.us.
Say your child needs a dentist, for example. Routine dental care is an important part of health care. Even though SC Choices does not have dentist names on our website, some dentists are tied to your child's health plan and may be a part of his or her coverage. You can locate all Medicaid providers on the Department of Health and Human Services' website.
To find providers, look on the left-hand side of the SCDHHS site for GENERAL INFORMATION, click on this and then click on Search For a Provider on the right-hand side of the next screen. Then enter the county, type of provider, and click on submit. When you do this, you will find a list of nearby dentists and other specialists, like eye doctors (optometrists) and foot doctors (podiatrists).
After you find the doctor in your area, call the doctor's office to make sure he or she is accepting new patients and that your health plan will work. Then make an appointment!
